Akure North: House of Assembly aspirant, Prince Omololu Ogunsuyi sets to train over 100 cassava farmers in pest control
The major aspirant for the Ondo State House of Assembly, Akure North Constituency under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Omololu Ogunsuyi has concluded plan to train over 100 cassava farmers in Akure North Local Government area of Ondo State in the management and control of pests and diseases, particularly white flies on cassava.
The Prince said that the white flies had infected cassava plant with cassava mosaic disease, leading to a consistent reduction in output in some cassava-producing states in the local government and the state at large.
Speaking with Coastal Renaissance news on Wednesday, 20th April, 2022 in Akure, the state capital of Ondo State, stated that the government has been doing everything possible to eradicate the whiteflies, hence the need for the individuals to complement government’s capacity building and that the train will be held in early May 2022 at Flora-B hotel, Iju-Itaogbolu, Akure North Local Government, Ondo State.
“Beyond government efforts, we need to complement the effort of the government as an individual to save the farm products of the farmers, otherwise, they will run into lose”.
According to the Prince, the training becomes necessary to sensitise farmers and other stakeholders along the cassava value chain from Akure North Local Government through the workshop to spread the basic concept of agricultural best practices on whitefly and disease control in cassava production.
He said, “Whitefly is an old scourge but cassava farmers are now overlooking it, but the disease is coming much stronger and so the cassava varieties that are always planted are loosing vigour, so the Prince is ready to partner Ondo State Ministry of Agriculture Development Programme and Agro-Allied Company to swing into action and ameliorate the problem.”
