In a message sent on his twitter on Tuesday, Senator Dino Melaye revealed the monthly statutory salary of a Nigeria’s Councilor. He said: “Salary for a councilor, statutory – N250,000 per month, sitting allowance – N80,000 per month (N10,000 per sitting – 8 sitting in a month) totalled N330,000 per month
Dino Melaye, former Kogi West Senator, has alleged the state Governor, Yahaya Bello of short changing the present councilors in Kogi State.
Melaye alleged that Yahaya Bello is paying councilors a sum of N140,000 instead of the normal N330,000 monthly
He pointed out that the councilors can not cry out because they were all appointed by the Governor.
In a Twitter, Melaye said: “Salary for councilor, statutory N250,000 per month, sitting allowance – N80,000 per month (N10,000 per sitting – 8 sitting in a month) totalled N330,000 per month”.
“But the present Councilors in Yahaya Bello-led government earned N140,000 per month, no sitting allowance. Unfortunately, the councilors cannot talk, they cannnt fight for their rights because they were all appointed.”
Surprisingly, this is coming at a time the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan backed the call for local governments’ autonomy in the country.
If you would recall, Lawan said such autonomy would help the third tier of government to effectively contribute towards the development of Nigeria.
He stressed that over the years, local governments have suffered and crumbled due to lack of administrations to effectively discharge their constitutional roles.
