The people of Ondo State, especially the riverine communities of Ilaje Local Government Area, are witnessing the emergence of a new era of economic promise and industrial transformation. The renewed commitment to the Olókọla Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ) project by the Dangote Group, alongside the proposed Sahara Oil exploration activities within our coastal corridor, has rekindled hope and excitement across communities that have long awaited the full realization of their economic potential.
For many years, our people have watched enormous opportunities pass by despite being blessed with abundant natural resources, strategic coastal advantages, and a hardworking population. Today, however, there is a growing sense that the tide has finally turned.
The visionary leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has played a crucial role in restoring investor confidence and positioning Ondo State as a destination for large-scale investments capable of changing the fortunes of generations. Through purposeful engagement, policy consistency, and a commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses, the Governor has opened the door to opportunities that were once considered unattainable.
I also want to appreciate my boss, Oweizidei Thomas Ekpemupolo, fondly called Tompolo for the fulfillment of his promise and assurance. He assured the Federal Government that if his company was engaged, relative peace would be restored to the Niger Delta region within two to three years, creating an enabling environment for both local and foreign investment.
Today, that vision has largely been realized. The improved peace and stability in the region have contributed to increased investor confidence and economic opportunities. To the glory of God, Tompolo’s prediction has come to pass.
The proposed Sahara Oil exploration project and the revival of the Olókọla Free Trade Zone are not merely business ventures; they are catalysts for economic empowerment, job creation, infrastructure development, and social advancement.
As Coordinator of Tantita Security Services in Ondo State, I understand the importance of creating an atmosphere where investment can thrive. Sustainable economic development is closely linked to security, stability, and community participation. The success of Tantita’s operations across the Niger Delta has demonstrated that when communities become stakeholders in economic activities and security initiatives, development follows naturally.
The return of major investors to Ilaje land sends a powerful message that Ondo State is ready for business. More importantly, it signals that our coastal communities are finally being recognized as critical contributors to Nigeria’s economic growth.
The expectations of the people are understandably enormous. Thousands of young men and women are looking forward to employment opportunities that will arise from construction activities, port operations, logistics services, marine engineering, oil and gas support services, manufacturing, and various ancillary industries expected to spring up around these projects.
For our youths, this represents a pathway to meaningful employment and economic independence. For local businesses, it offers expanded markets and increased commercial activities. For traditional communities, it presents an opportunity to experience unprecedented infrastructure development and improved living standards.
The Olókọla Free Trade Zone, with its proposed deep-sea port, petrochemical facilities, fertilizer plants, gas processing infrastructure, shipyards, and manufacturing clusters, has the capacity to transform Ondo State into one of Nigeria’s foremost industrial and maritime hubs. It will not only serve Ondo State but also provide a strategic gateway for trade and commerce across the country and the West African sub-region.
Equally significant is the potential impact of Sahara Oil’s exploration activities. Beyond increasing economic activity within the state’s energy sector, the project is expected to create opportunities for local content participation, skill acquisition, technology transfer, and increased revenue generation that can support further development initiatives.
For the people of Ilaje, who have historically contributed immensely to Nigeria’s oil and gas economy, these developments represent more than investment announcements. They symbolize recognition, inclusion, and long-awaited economic justice.
There is particular excitement among fishermen, traders, artisans, transport operators, and community leaders who foresee a future where economic opportunities become more accessible and where the benefits of development are felt directly within the communities.
The anticipated growth in infrastructure will also have far-reaching effects. Better roads, improved educational facilities, healthcare services, housing developments, and expanded commercial centers will enhance the quality of life for residents and create a more prosperous environment for future generations.
Furthermore, these projects have the potential to significantly reduce youth migration from our communities. Rather than leaving their homeland in search of opportunities elsewhere, many young people will be able to build rewarding careers and successful businesses within Ondo State.
As stakeholders in the development of the Niger Delta region, we must continue to support initiatives that promote economic growth while ensuring that host communities remain active partners in the process. Community engagement, environmental sustainability, youth empowerment, and social responsibility must remain central pillars of implementation.
Today, the people of Ondo State have every reason to be optimistic. The revival of the Olókọla Free Trade Zone and the proposed Sahara Oil exploration project represent the convergence of visionary leadership, investor confidence, and the aspirations of a people determined to achieve sustainable development.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa deserves commendation for providing the leadership that has attracted these transformative opportunities to our state. His administration has demonstrated that with commitment, strategic planning, and collaboration, Ondo State can become a major economic force within Nigeria and beyond.
The future that our people have envisioned for decades is gradually coming into view. The coastline that once symbolized missed opportunities is now poised to become a corridor of prosperity, industrial growth, and economic advancement.
For Ilaje, for Ondo State, and for the Niger Delta at large, this is more than a moment of celebration. It is the beginning of a new chapter-one defined by opportunity, growth, and shared prosperity.
