Insecurity: Poroye Biyi urges Ondo State people to keep faith with Akeredolu & Aiyedatiwa, commends their doggedness & determination in protecting life and property of the citizens as he gives nod to Amotekun’s concept and promises donation
A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairman of Emerging Political Platform (EPP) in Ondo State, Prince Poroye Biyi, has urged the people of Ondo State to keep faith with the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and his Deputy, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa for their doggedness and determination to protect lives and properties of the citizenry, gave nod to Amotekun’s concept and promised to encourage Ondo State Amotekun Corps and equally implored all sons and daughters of Ondo State across the globe to support and donate materials towards the sustainability of Amotekun in Ondo State for impressive service delivery.
Speaking with journalists at an interactive session in Abuja yesterday, 5th October, 2021, Poroye urged security chiefs, traditional and community leaders to complement Governor Akeredolu’s efforts and charged Ondo State people to continue to pray for Akeredolu-led administration for peace and tranquility to reign supreme in the state.
He further urged security chiefs in the state to remain vigilant and ensure the protection of life and property of the citizens which is the bedrock and ultimate achievement of any administration.
“No one is perfect on earth except God. Akeredolu is a human and we can’t expect him to be perfect but the truth of the matter is that his frantic efforts in protecting the life and property of the Ondo State people is admirable and commendable. His tract record of achievements on road infrastructural projects is not only applaudable but also creditable. His strong determination to reduce increase rate of unemployed graduates and youths by providing employment and empowerment programmes into public service and recent arrangement and mode of payment of workers’ salaries is a welcome development. His executive measure and approach in tackling incessant increase of goods and services by different associations and unions is worthy of praise. I pray and enjoy him to do more”.
“Nigeria is a signatory to various international/regional instruments (protocols) that promote and protect human right, however, much is left to be desired in implementing and taking responsibility of these instruments in the face of gross violations of human rights of her citizens”.
“Article 3 of the Universal Declaration on Human Right states that everyone has a right to life, liberty and security.. Equally, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Charter) Article 4, enshrines the right to life as follows, “…human beings are inviolable. Every human being shall be entitled to respect for his life and the integrity of his person. No one may be arbitrarily deprived of this right…”
“The right to life is amply provided for in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) in Sec 33, which clearly states that every person has a right to life and no one shall be deprived intentionally of his life, save in execution of the sentence of a court in respect of a criminal offence of which he has been found guilty in Nigeria. Likewise, Section 14 (2b) states that the welfare and security of the citizens shall be the primary purpose of government. But irrespective of all the above provisions, Nigerians continue to witness cases of gross violation of human rights”.
“From the fore going, it can be deduced that the State has the responsibility to develop a practical framework to promote, protect and fulfill the right to life of its citizens and must be seen to take practical steps to prevent arbitrary deprivations of life and further conduct prompt, thorough and transparent investigations into any such deprivations that may have occurred, holding perpetrators accountable and providing effective remedy for the victims”.
“This, however, is not the case in Nigeria, where human beings are massacred with impunity and properties wasted almost on a daily basis. The African Centre for Strategic Studies (ACSS) estimates that over 60,000 persons were killed in Nigeria’s Middle Belt between 2001 and 2016. In the first 70 days of 2018, over 1,400 persons were killed violently across the country, an average of nearly 40 per State and the Federal Capital Territory. Between 2019 and 2021, thousands of people had been killed innocently. In parts of the North East, Boko Haram militant group continues to terrorize, killing thousands of citizens while armed bandits parading as Fulani herdsmen continue to unleash mayhem in parts of Middle Belt and South East states on innocent Nigerians going about their daily activities”.
“The relative peace we are enjoying today in Ondo State is a credit to Governor Akeredolu-led administration. The concept of Amotekun Corps is admirable and productive”.
Poroye finally commended the loyalty and support of the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa to his boss and also appreciated the State Party Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin for conducting free and fair Ward and Local Government congresses in Ondo State without any rancour.
