OMONIRA: A Posthumous Celebration of the Exemplar Titan of Ilajeland

It is with utmost reverence and admiration that we gather here today to celebrate the posthumous birthday of a great man, Chief Johnbull Olusola Erobi Ijagbomo Omonira. His contributions to Ilajeland and beyond have left an indelible mark on our history and serve as a testament to his unwavering dedication and selflessness.
As a proud son of Ilaje, Chief Olusola Omonira brought the esteemed presence of Chief Obafemi Awolowo to Ilajeland, a moment that would forever link our region to the wider Nigerian community. His visionary leadership led to the dredging of Ilaje by the Westminster Dredging Company, opening doors to greater recognition and development for our beloved Ilajeland. Chief Olusola Omonira pioneered the private scholarship scheme in our community, providing countless opportunities for both indigenes and non-indigenes to pursue higher education abroad, as well as supporting thousands of students within Nigeria.
Chief Olusola Omonira’s political career was marked by his unwavering commitment to the betterment of Ilajeland. As the first indigene of Ilajeland to represent our region at the Federal legislative level, he championed the formation of OMAPADEC, which later evolved into OSOPADEC. His strategic efforts to encourage the return of Ilaje elites to contribute to the development of our land, exemplified by the purchase of land in Igbokoda and his subsequent involvement of prominent figures such as Chief Omoshehin, Chief Loto, Chief Aiyenuro and HRH, Oba (Dr.) Frederick Enitiolorunda Akinruntan, CON, CFR, the Olugbo of Ugbo to mention a few, further underscored his dedication to the progress of Ilajeland.
Chief Olusola Omonira recognized the potential for further development in Ilajeland if the Ilaje Elites harnessed their national and international influence. In a testament to his enduring legacy, he reserved a portion of land to construct his family house, ensuring his impact would be preserved for generations to come.
His exceptional leadership and dedication were acknowledged by all Ilaje kingdoms, as he was bestowed with three esteemed royal titles: The Aseto of Mahin in 1974, The Ogbetu of Ugbo in 1974, and the Iyun Oba of Etikan in 1975. These honors exemplify the deep respect and admiration he commanded within the Ilaje community.
In the realm of Ilajeland, few individuals possess the unwavering dedication and selflessness exhibited by Chief Olusola Omonira. His passion for Ilaje and his commitment to its progress were so profound that he placed his personal needs on hold, even sacrificing his life for the cause he believed in. Chief Olusola Omonira’s exceptional character sets him apart not only within Ilajeland but throughout Nigeria.
Under the mentorship of Papa Awo, Chief Olusola Omonira was being groomed to serve as the Federal Cabinet Minister for Commerce. However, Papa Awo’s mandate was unjustly taken away, robbing Chief Olusola Omonira of the opportunity to fulfill this role. Despite this setback, he remained steadfastly loyal to Papa Awo and the political party. He stood by Papa Awo’s side in the pursuit of justice through the judicial process, although their efforts were ultimately thwarted.
In the intricate workings of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Chief Olusola Omonira was offered the position of governor of Ondo State after Pa Adekule Ajasin. However, he declined this prestigious role, still believing that Papa Awo would reclaim his mandate. His pursuit of power was not driven by personal ambition, but by a genuine desire to make a difference in Ilajeland, Ondo State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria at large.
Chief Olusola Omonira’s unwavering loyalty was a defining characteristic of his character. He remained steadfast in his principles, never wavering or betraying his friends or people. Even as some of his colleagues defected to the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), he maintained cordial relationships with them, demonstrating his ability to work across political divides for the advancement of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Erobi Ijagbomo Manira, or “think no evil” as his original birth name suggests, epitomized the essence of a true statesman. His unwavering commitment to the betterment of Ilajeland, Ondo State, and Nigeria as a whole serves as an inspiration to all. Chief Olusola Omonira’s legacy is one of loyalty, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of positive change for the nation.
Chief Olusola Omonira’s unwavering loyalty to his colleagues was a testament to his character. Despite a miscommunication that led to the cancellation of a dinner party meant to welcome Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua, Chief Olusola Omonira, known as Erobi, did not harbor any resentment. The incident, orchestrated by another Ilaje man, falsely portrayed Chief Olusola Omonira as belonging to a rival faction, causing Olumilua to miss out on the opportunity to become a Senator. However, years later, Bamidele Olumilua, recognizing the truth, personally apologized for the misunderstanding, and Chief Olusola Omonira graciously accepted.
Chief Olusola Omonira’s ability to work across the political divide was further exemplified by his role as the Chairman of the House Committee on Commerce & Industry, despite his party, the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), being in the minority during 1979 to 1983. This demonstrated his commitment to service and his willingness to collaborate for the greater good.
Breaking tradition, Johnbull Olusola Erobi Ijagbomo adopted “Omonira” as his last name, in honor of his mother who made great sacrifices to support his education. As the breadwinner among his siblings, Chief Olusola Omonira generously provided for his brothers, sisters, and their children. This act of gratitude stemmed from his older brother, Elkanah Ijagbomo, selflessly giving up his own education so that Chief Olusola Omonira could pursue his dreams. Chief Olusola Omonira reciprocated this kindness by ensuring that not only his immediate family, but also subsequent generations had the opportunity for education and a better future.
Chief Olusola Omonira’s legacy is one of loyalty, generosity, and a deep commitment to the well-being and advancement of his family and community. His selfless actions continue to inspire and serve as a testament to the enduring power of compassion and gratitude.
Chief Olusola Omonira’s academic excellence led him to study in Great Britain on a government scholarship. He showcased his leadership abilities by becoming the President of the Nigerian Students Union in the U.K. During his time in Great Britain, he met and married Miss Ibironke Egbaiyelo, a chartered secretary and nursing midwife.
Returning to Nigeria in 1970, Chief Olusola Omonira took up a position as a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University before becoming the Financial Comptroller for NIFINCO, a company owned by the defunct Western State Government. He later resigned from this post to establish his first company, Harrisons Industries, renowned for its production of “Naijalight” candles for all occasions. Chief Olusola Omonira also founded Maxi Market LTD, the first indigenous supermarket in Nigeria and possibly West Africa, with outlets in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos, as well as in the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).
Despite his human flaws, Chief Olusola Omonira’s impact on Ilajeland remains significant. Known as one of the wealthiest men in Ondo State during his time, his selflessness in empowering both the rich and the poor in Ilajeland is well-documented.
As a loving son and aspiring mini-titan, I write this piece to honor the memory of my father, Chief Olusola Omonira, born on October 8th, 1934, and who passed away on December 24th, 1997. I dedicate this piece to inform my younger siblings, and anyone interested in the exemplary titan of Ilajeland known as Manira.
A respected Governor of Ondo State once pondered who would fill Chief Olusola Omonira’s shoes. This question has lingered in my heart, as I believe that one light can guide others to become lights themselves. Chief Olusola Omonira was a guiding light for Ilajeland, alongside other great sons and daughters. I write this piece with the hope that it will ignite someone to carry on the torch in Ilajeland, selflessly building upon the foundations laid by this esteemed son of Ilajeland and Ondo State. As I remember my father on his posthumous birthday this October 8th, 2023, I pray that our lives, as his children, will offer other sons and daughters of Ilaje and Ondo State a glimpse of a political, intellectual, social, and economic titan of Ilajeland.
Chief, we love you. May your memory and legacy be celebrated with joy on this special day.
